From elite performance to children’s storytelling, Brian Keane is on a mission to simplify health. His philosophy? Master sleep, movement and nutrition, letting consistency, not extremes, do the heavy lifting.
A former primary school teacher turned bestselling author, ultra-endurance athlete and one of Ireland’s most recognisable fitness voices, Brian Keane has built his career on cutting through the confusion of modern wellness. Whether he’s coaching high performers, writing his new book Scaling Your Story for fitness professionals, or co-creating The Adventures of Pete and Dex with his daughter, his message is about embracing consistency over intensity, and building habits that last.
When it comes to health and performance, what’s the big picture most people are missing?
“That health and performance are all interconnected. How you sleep impacts your hormones, which impacts your energy levels and capacity to move, which impacts your nutritional choices; and those choices then circle back to influence the quality of your sleep. It’s one continuous loop, not a set of separate boxes to tick.
“Most people focus on one thing at a time, usually diet or exercise, while neglecting the others. But sleep is the foundation everything else is built on. When you under-sleep, your hunger hormones spike, your motivation to move drops, and your body holds onto stress. Prioritise your sleep, and movement and nutrition naturally become easier. Add consistent daily movement, even something as simple as a 20-minute walk; and you create momentum that makes every other healthy habit feel less like effort and more like a natural part of your day.
“Get those three things working together, sleep, movement, and nutrition; and the results people spend years chasing tend to start taking care of themselves.”
There’s a lot of noise in the fitness industry. What are the biggest myths you’re still trying to dismantle in 2026?
“That you can out-train a bad diet. Exercise has a whole host of benefits, it makes you stronger, fitter, and the endorphin high is wonderful for stress management and mood; but your nutrition and food choices are what fuel everything. Fix that first and exercise will have a much higher impact all round.”
In your experience, what’s the most overlooked factor when it comes to long-term strength and vitality?
“Consistency over intensity. It’s so tempting to set a big goal and try to do everything at 100%, but that’s not sustainable for most of us, long term. Working out three to five times a week and eating nutritious food 80% of the time, while allowing room for your favourite foods, is the real secret to long-term strength and vitality.”
Nutrition can feel overwhelming. If someone could only focus on three fundamentals, what would they be?
“Address one meal at a time. It feels like the right thing to do to make all the changes at once, but that leads to most people falling off track after a few weeks. Try making a healthier breakfast choice every day this week - porridge, a smoothie, eggs on wholegrain toast, for example; and when that starts to feel automatic, apply the same approach to lunch, then dinner. Making changes slowly almost always leads to better, more sustainable long-term results.
“Prioritise protein at every meal. Protein keeps you fuller for longer, supports muscle maintenance, and reduces the urge to snack on things that don’t serve you. Whether it’s eggs, chicken, fish, Greek yogurt, or a quality protein shake, making sure protein anchors every meal is a game changer for most people.
“Don’t aim for perfection, aim for consistency. The 80/20 rule has served my clients well for years. Eat nutritious whole foods 80% of the time and leave 20% for the foods you genuinely enjoy. That flexibility is what makes it sustainable; and sustainability is what actually gets results.”
You’re about to release a new book. What inspired you to write it?
“The new book, Scaling Your Story, is for fitness professionals who are struggling to rise above the noise in a crowded market, one increasingly dominated by AI. It’s designed to help them share their struggles and their story so they can attract clients who are a great fit for them and serve them on a deeper level.”
You’re also launching a children’s superhero series – that’s a brilliant pivot. What sparked the idea to bring strength, resilience and health into storytelling for kids?
“It started as a project with my daughter Holly (age 10) to help get her reading more. She brought so much excitement and creativity to it, and she can’t wait to read each new chapter of The Adventures of Pete and Dex. It was her enthusiasm that made me realise there was something more here than just a passion project between a father and daughter. I was a primary school teacher for four years, and getting children excited about reading was always a passion of mine. Now it feels like a full-circle moment, a chance to give back to that world after more than a decade away from it.”

You’re known for practising what you preach. What does your own daily performance routine look like?
“I work out five days a week without fail, a mix of weightlifting, running, sport, and yoga. I eat 80% whole foods and 20% foods I genuinely love, like protein bars and chocolate. I take a microbiotic every single day; Udo’s Choice Super 8 Gold has been a staple of mine for more than five years. I also use creatine and caffeine for performance, and on occasion, amino acids like glutamine when my training phase is particularly demanding. I ran my own marathon in Galway City at the end of January, so I used it every day during that preparation.”
Looking ahead, what does the future of fitness look like to you?
“As the world feels increasingly disconnected with the rise of social media and AI, I think we’ll start returning to more in-person activities. The drive for community and connection has been diminished over the last few years, particularly in the wake of the pandemic; and we’re beginning to understand just how important it is to do things in the real world. I hope my children’s book will inspire a love of reading and fitness in the next generation, and give them the foundation they need to become happier, healthier adults.”
